NXT COMMUNITY

We asked and you delivered Nxters! The IGNIS logo competition has 29 great designs submitted. Many people have already expressed their opinion and now we have set up a poll on Nxt’s blockchain in order to let the community show their preferences for the logo. We are grateful to the community for their support in participating in this competition. However, we should keep in mind that Jelurida and the Nxt Foundation have the final say. The top 3 logos will be selected in less than 48 hours.

Poll title is “IGNIS LOGO

The poll ID is 1977236085310946157
Sender account is NXT-ZZW7-U2KL-AV2U-8P8FE

In this post you can find a compilation with the 29 options.

The poll will be active until block 1391320 (12th of July, just 48 hours to cast your vote!!!)

You can choose up to 3 options out of the 29 available but you must hold at least 1000 NXT in your Nxt account in order to cast your vote.

The creator of the winning design will be awarded 5000NXT and a free 1 year Nxt Foundation Supporter+ status.

  • IGNIS ICO will be held on Nxt Blockchain

Along with a shiny new logo, IGNIS will have its ICO in the near future.

Nxt and Ardor core developer Riker explains some of the technical details:

When Ardor mainnet is launched:
[The] ARDR parent chain tokens will be distributed based on the NXT ARDR asset id 12422608354438203866 balances [on the Nxt Blockchain].

IGNIS child chain tokens will be distributed as follows:

  • 500 Million based on the JLRDA currency balances sold during the ICOThis will include small amounts of IGNIS already promised through promotions
  • slightly less than 500 Million IGNIS will be distributed based on the existing NXT balances at 2:1 ratio.

The JLRDA currency, most likely, won’t be supported by exchanges, so you’ll have to use the NXT wallet to purchase it and use the same passphrase in the Ardor wallet to receive your IGNIS.

After the mainnet launch, there will be a NXT hard fork which will lock the [Nxt] ARDR asset balances for trading [on the Nxt Blockchain] to prevent scams.

Exchanges will have to somehow replicate this distribution process which won’t be simple.

  • Exchanges which assign NXT account per user can simply connect to Ardor using the same passphrase and observe the distribution balances.
  • Exchanges which keep all balances in a pool will have to follow the distribution process.

We will be using NXT for the IGNIS ICO because we are proud of NXT and we trust NXT more than we trust Bitcoin or ETH and because it is natural for a token based on the NXT technology to use the NXT technology for its ICO. There are also good technical reasons for this which will be explained soon.

  • #OpEasterEgg

Oh my, look at all the FREE STUFF we have just lying around. Last week, 5 digital copies of the Nxt book, SNAPSHOT, which is finally going to be listed for sale on the Nxt Marketplace from July 15th onwards, were given away in the Nxt blockchain Easter egg hunt.

Nxters pasted the number above into a Nxt Blockchain Explorer and it finally made sense. Others followed the clue from our last newsletter; made a search for ‘OpEasterEgg’ in the Nxt Marketplace, and found 5 new items for sale for 1 NXT. The name of the item was ‘Redeem Code’, the ‘tag’ it was listed under was ‘OpEasterEgg’. And the item, the Redeem Code, was, in fact, a riddle.

48 hours.

Passphrase:

Success of Nxt is supposed to be achieved by [ … ]

https://spideroak.com/browse/share/easteregg/Nxt

To participants who did NOT manage to find the passphrase in time:

Read BCNext’s Nxt on Nxter.org
or see https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=345619.msg4383169#msg4383169

The missing words, and thus the passphrase, were: work of a LOT of PEOPLE.

We’re glad to see more and more followers of our Twitter account, glad for the blockchain messages, glad to see participants reach out and give each other a helping hand by sharing additional clues, and glad to showcase some of Nxt’s many features in a fun way and give away free stuff at the same time.

To join the Nxt Blockchain Easter egg hunt, just follow the news and make sure to follow #OpEasterEggs.

  • If you do not forge, Nxt dies… – Megalodon Stops the Campaign

No, this isn’t Halo Forge, this is about the cessation of the Forging Bounty established by Megalodon a year ago.

The security and future of Nxt, it’s community, and your investment in it, is at stake here. Please do not just sit on your stake; productively use it for forging!

Lurker10 explains:

If you do not forge, Nxt dies…and your investment also dies.

When the total forging stake gets too low, security of the network is decreased, it becomes vulnerable to 51% attacks.

The total forging stake has dropped to 270 million of the total supply of NXT coins. This is an all time low. Please start forging to protect your investment.

Megalodon:

It is precisely for this reason that I initiated the Forging Bounty back in June 28, 2016.

After running it for over a year and distributing almost 2 million NXT, the result has been disappointing. Instead of seeing an increase, we get a decrease in total forging power. Obviously, this incentive does not work. Hence, I’m cancelling this bounty program.

However, the Lucky Node program run by Lurker10 will continue to be funded until further notice.

A great use of a Raspberry Pi is to host a dedicated Nxt forging node! If you have a Pi sitting around, whimpering about how it is not being used to generate you any money, then we have the solution for you!

Here are the instructions on how to setup the Pi to be a dedicated node.

Also, a great way to support the Nxter Newsletters and NXTER.ORG is to use our forging node.

Arthur explains:

By leasing your NXT balance to us @ alias nxthub1 (acct NXT-NYJW-6M4F-6LG2-76FR5), you support the Nxt network PLUS our work.

It will cost you just 1 NXT.

Click on your balance in the Nxt Client

> Click Account Leasing

> Click Lease your balance to another account

> Enter account NXT-NYJW-6M4F-6LG2-76FR5 or alias ‘Nxthub1’. Choose max period (default).

Lease.

Nxter Magazine / NXTER.ORG’s forging node is nrs.nxter.org.

Please consider doing so. OR forge with your own account or node. Thanks.

The foundation of the Nxt Blockchain is forging. It is what makes our currency valuable and it is what makes our network strong.

  • Adel – Video Presentation

Adel, another token on the Nxt blockchain, has a created a new video presentation.

In their words:

One of the cornerstones of our community is to produce quality content. Co-founder, Gabriel Dusil, delivered a presentation to a group of Dutch bankers, which has been produced into two 20 minute videos.

In the last five minutes, Gabriel shares his previous experiences, selling technology to decision makers who innovate themselves out of a job. Gabriel summarized by saying: “Blockchain will be seen as a threat to a departmental empire, or an opportunity to expand one.”

This presentation is an excellent one to share with your network as it offers the technical basics of blockchain while also providing a long term view of the obstacles and opportunities facing the industry.

We will be posting this video to our social channels today, please be sure to share, retweet and upvote. Your social support does make a difference.

  • [CORE] Bug bounty 3 – Track loading progress before lock screen is displayed

Riker has offered two rewards in the form of NXT to the person who manages to solve these challenges.

Currently when connecting to a remote node for the first time, it’s not uncommon to see a Blue screen displayed for 10-20 seconds while the client fetches the necessary resources.

The purpose of the task is to display a moving progress bar when loading the client until the lock screen is displayed.

There is no simple solution for this because of the way the client resources are loaded synchronously using the nrs.sitebuild.js script.

This synchronous loading is necessary in order to initialize the handle bars components and the localization resources.

The solution can utilize any wide spread web development technique, but not rely on any plugin, and has to work both in browser and in the mobile browser and not break the desktop wallet (which is less affected by this problem).

We would like to offer a 20K NXT bounty for this task.

  • [CORE] Bug bounty 4 – “Time to next block” counter

The purpose of this task is to implement an expected next block counter.
Currently we have the generators page which displays the expected next forger and expected forging time.

You will need to implement a next block count down label based on this data in the left pane next to the block height.

Clicking this widget will open the existing generators page.

The code has to be clean and the widget has to look elegant and integrate well with the existing UI layout.

We would like to offer a 5K NXT bounty for this task.

  • Adel – Established as an LLC

Adel’s team, the community-powered startup incubator that focuses on blockchain technology, has recently announced that it is going to create a Limited Liability Company to meet all of the legal and tax issues stemming from the Anti-Money Laundering and the Countering the Financing  of Terrorism Code (2015). As a direct consequence of setting up this complex legal structure, the start of the ICO process is going to be delayed for 2 months.

Nxter.org was one of the first media outlets to cover this piece of news in this article where Arthur Penzl gave us his opinion about this change:

To me, as potential investor, this is good news, worth a 2 months delay.
Others may disagree and can air their counter opinions in the comments field.
But, we all know it. If cryptocurrency technologies and blockchain ICO’s are to ever gain mainstream adoption, there’s no other way but to leave the grey zone behind, legally register, and comply with all regulatory and legal requirements including KYC/AML policies. I wish Adel good luck with that – many eyes will undoubtedly be on them.

Creating an LLC will further allow Adel to have the necessary legal structure to protect the brand, investors, and the whole ecosystem. The team also hopes that this step they are taking will set an example for future ICOs.

  • Jupiter – New Blockchain Based on Nxt Technology

Steven Grove, aka Sigwo, founder of the Darcrus platform, has announced the future launch of the Jupiter platform, a new customized blockchain created with the support of Jelurida, the corporation that brings together the developers of both the Nxt and Ardor platforms. Jupiter is going to be the new private blockchain that will sustain Sigwo Technologies LLC, an ambitious project that will create a secure, decentralized, and effective system to store and encrypt your data.

This is what Steven says about Jupiter’s features and the reasons why they want to use a private blockchain based on Nxt:

I’ve been testing on NXT’s testnet for 2 months, validating my design of decentrally storing and encrypting syslog/authorization messages from my Linux servers. In my testing, I found increased fees were needed to be paid due to the complex nature and size of my messages. After consulting with the NXT Core Devs, Sigwo Technologies will be securing it’s own blockchain for building the future platform…

..The reason behind creating Jupiter is simple… Using any other blockchain would not be economically feasible. One example of my encrypted syslog application would create 29 million messages daily. In NXT terms and today’s prices, that would cost this particular business $1,238,300.00 per day to store messages..

Jelurida is the company building Jupiter and have a proposed delivery date of March 10th, 2017. In this time I will be starting plugins (dappsheets) to showcase the flexibility of Jupiter while I wait. I still test on the Nxt testnet for now. Jupiter will have non-tradable tokens that are included in software packages to create transactions and store the data on the blockchain. After a time period, tokens are recycled to the businesses to continue their use of Jupiter and it’s plugins. Data is always theirs, as simply having the passphrase will unlock all the data stored. The recycling period is akin to a subscription and support package.

  • Decentralized Revolution – Blockchain Applications That Are Not Bitcoin

The concept of colored coins in Bitcoin has been the catalyst for new crypto platforms that go beyond just money transfers. In this article published on Decentralized Revolution, Kareem Audi gives a short overview of three blockchain platforms that, in his view, have big advantages over Bitcoin, such as Nxt.

Nxt… packs powerful developer tools to create your own decentralized apps, it also has an internal marketplace, much like eBay… it has its own decentralized voting system, and it’s own decentralized storage with more features being rolled out constantly… ARDOR is just one

  • Adel – Why We Chose Nxt

Gabriel Dusil, co-founder of Adel, runs his own blog  where he publishes some of the latest news about the Adel ecosystem. One of the latest entries includes a reference to the 6th white paper published by the Adel team titled Maintaining Integrity, where some of the basic principles of this community-based ecosystem are described, and how it can use cryptocurrencies in a sustainable and profitable way to fund projects.

The State is the People & the People are the State

With this premise in mind, and after extensive research and evaluation, this white paper goes over the reasons why they chose Nxt and Ardor technology to support its infrastructure.

Adel decided to build on the Nxt platform – a blockchain with features that expand the functionality of pioneering cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin. These features include Shuffling, Voting, Aliases, and Phasing. The source code for Nxt has also been publicly disclosed, optimized, and perfected using (among other techniques) the Error Propagation Method, where the investigation and awarded discovery of deliberately inserted errors serves to help audit the source code itself.

Adel will move to Ardor, the multi-chain development of Nxt, in late 2017. Like Nxt, Ardor will have features that enhance the functionality of blockchain technology, making it an ideal platform for future projects.  The Ardor child chain architecture will allow for the easy creation of a dependent blockchain that will be connected to and secured by the main Ardor blockchain. Ardor also solves scalability issues with a pruning feature so that future nodes will only download and keep transaction records on the main chain, as well as child chain transactions from the past 24 hours. However, it is still possible for child chain transactions to be kept, if so desired, with the use of an archival node that keeps all of the transaction records. This scalability is one of the ‘Holy Grails’ of cryptocurrency and blockchain development.

Nxt has already revolutionized the world of blockchain technology platforms by providing groundbreaking cryptocurrency features, as well as a powerful, modular toolset to build innovative business opportunities. All of Nxt’s functionality will be present in the Ardor platform, in addition to the advanced features (such as global scalability) that the Ardor multi-chain architecture will provide.

The Nxt platform has all the tools needed to successfully manage an asset. Moreover, Ardor lets you have your own personalized blockchain (child chain), which is secured by the Ardor decentralized network. Adel knows all these advantages, and that’s the reason why they intend to be one of the first to benefit from Ardor:

Adel will move to Ardor… Ardor will have features that enhance the functionality of blockchain technology, making it an ideal platform for future projects.

  • SteemIt – Exponential Data Growth Could Push Any Blockchain Into Centralization

Oaldamster, author of this article on SteemIt, strongly believes that blockchain technology will become mainstream this year. More and more events related to this technology is taking place, such as the recent blockchain hackaton organized at Groningen, where 50 teams from 11 different countries showed their projects.

Doing some mathematical calculations, the author explains that the block size problem in Bitcoin and how, in his opinion, increasing the size of the block is far from being an ideal solution. The article also talks about Nxt’s Monetary System and how easy it is to launch your own asset on this platform. The author also mentions how Ardor is going to try to solve the problem of blockchain bloat using data pruning to keep the size of the blockchain controlled.

At its current state and the exponential data growth speed it seems almost inevitable that most mainstream accepted blockchains will become more or less centralized

Ardor will be the first fully decentralized platform that will use data pruning to reduce the blockchain bloat problem, thus allowing improved scalability with the child chain infrastructure.

  • Crypto Compare – How To Mine Nxt

This article published at Crypto Compare goes over the resources necessary to run a Proof-of-Work blockchain system, such as: buying expensive mining equipment, extensive hardware knowledge, and hours of dedicated work and patience. The author then explains the differences with Proof-of-Stake platforms like Nxt, the first one to use this algorithm entirely.

Below, you can also find a step-by-step tutorial with images where any user can learn how to start forging Nxt by themselves.

In order to accommodate users that want to participate in the mining consensus, but don’t want to fill their house with hot and loud equipment or bet in a Cloud mining contract, we are going to show you how to mine (forge) NXT. Let’s call this a guide for miners who don’t want to get their hands dirty!

We’d also like to remind advanced users with additional skills that we also previously published a tutorial about setting up a Nxt node on a Raspberry Pi 2. In addition, Megalodon’s campaign, The Forging Bounty Lottery, is still running. So, whenever you generate a block, you won’t only receive the forging fees, but also some extra NXT coming from this campaign.

  • Due – Blockchain Keeps Moving Forward as More Innovators Jump In

Miranda Marquit explains, in this blog post published at Due, some of the reasons why blockchain technology is growing in popularity and how more and more entrepreneurs are focusing their attention on blockchain projects such as Nxt.

The author goes over some of the current features of Nxt and how Ardor will add more to it to make it even easier and safer for everyone to make blockchain even more widely used:

Nxt has a… multi-step functionality built in, requiring parties to agree to certain conditions before completing transactions. That way, it’s possible to verify work before sending payment. On top of that, Ardor also allows automatic transactions, making it easier to set up recurring payments.

This is the first major update after initial mofowallet release. Improvements were made on almost all levels.

API Request Manager

The network request layer has been completely rewritten, it is now aware of all active and pending (API) requests. Requests are grouped and can be prioritized or cancelled all together, requests are bound to the controllers that started them and are automatically destroyed when the controller is destroyed.

Network requests are executed from a central interval (timer) and is no longer event based. The interval acts as an external agent that can take action and cancel requests if they either time out or take too long to start (when higher ranked requests take up all available slots).

The number of concurrent requests are set at six for now, this seems to work well while running on localhost and when connected to public API servers.

Decentralized API

Improvements are made in the usage of the decentralized API, users can run their own API server and add these to mofowallet. Because multiple public API servers are used, synchronization among those servers has to be performed on startup. Synchronizing involves a check if the server is up and functioning and a detailed analysis of the fork that the server is on.

Public API servers that are on a fork are ignored for the current session, thereby not wasting any network traffic.

API servers are required to have SSL enabled and must use a proper certificate.

Embedded Servers

Users are prompted if they want to start the embedded FIMK and/or NXT server on startup, options for each server are available to either start automatically or never start at all.

Users can run both servers at the same time but this does put a higher load on your system. However, running the servers is not required since mofowallet is fully functional when operating on the public API servers only.

Forging

Forging/mining is supported for all embedded servers. The blockchain must be downloaded before you can forge blocks. The forging UI has been updated and now requires your secret phrase to be entered only once, either enter your secret phrase or open your wallet file containing your secret phrase.

To see if you forged any blocks you will, for now, need to look at the amount forged label in the accounts section. Better feedback of exactly what blocks you forged and other info, like charts and averages, are under development.

Namespaced Aliases

Namespaced aliases now support encryption. This is the same encryption AES encryption offered for normal messages. Namespaced Aliases can be encrypted so only the owner account can decrypt or where the owner account and one other account can decrypt that.

Asset Exchange

Introducing the initial Asset Exchange UI for FIMK and NXT. UI is read only in this release meaning you cannot enter or cancel orders. Asset Exchange is a work in progress and it’s anticipated that it will change considerably. Our aim is to offer a professional full featured interface to both the FIMK and NXT decentralized exchanges. We consider a professional UI one that offers traders all tools required to do your daily trading.

Current AE UI includes:

1. historical price charts
2. listing of all available assets
3. display of current price and 24 hour percent change

Planned AE UI additions:

4. in client per asset blockchain based commenting
5. better charting (moving average, candle stick etc..)
6. automatic actions based on blockchain events (this requires the client to stay on)

Better Messaging

Better support for sending plain text or encrypted messages. Message transactions in the transaction history are displayed inline now. If you provided your secret phrase, messages are decrypted on the fly and can be seen inline in the account transaction history but also in the blockexplorer.

Startup Service

New service available to all plugins, plugins register with the startup service to do intialization upon application startup. Plugins register so called activities that show progress in the startup dialog, activities can be made to run only after certain other activities have finished running.

The startup dialog can be hidden by the user and the mofowallet is usable from that moment on. If certain functionality in mofowallet depends on an activity to complete it will be disabled until the activity has completed.

Highly Contextual Identifiers

All identifiers for blocks, transactions, accounts, aliases, block heights and more now support mouse events. Plugins can register for mouseover, mouse out and click events. This has enabled everything from the blockexplorer to the account section to be *clickable* and will show you a details dialog in which everything is again clickable.

Bugs fixed

Fixed a bug where sometimes sending a transaction does not immediately show up in your list of recent transactions. This now works correctly for all broadcasted transactions.

Fixed numerous performance bottle necks, desktop mofowallet is much faster than the initial 0.3 release.

Fixed the problem of mofowallet constantly sending requests to obtain state from the public servers. The rewritten network layer fixed this.

Fixed a bug where sending a transaction gave no meaningful feedback, on sending transactions the user now sees a dialog that shows transaction creation, signing and broadcasted feedback.

CoinTelegraph interviews: “NXT is to Bitcoin …as Tesla Model S is to a Volkswagen Beetle”

Allen Scott, Cointelegraph, writes:

CoinTelegraph had the chance to catch up with the NXT team. Known for its less resource-intensive mining and 100% proof-of-stake, it is no wonder why NXT recently surpassed the popular Dogecoin by market cap. But exchange rate and speculation aside, the NXT team explains why it is the “next” step in the evolution of cryptocurrencies and why Bitcoin is just the beginning.

CoinTelegraph: Nxt includes an innovative “proof-of-stake” feature which essentially means that coins are not created by “mining.” How then are Nxt coins created and put into circulation?

NXT: All the 1,000,000,000 NXT were available within the Genesis Block (= first block) and got distributed to the initial stakeholders. It was hardcoded into the source code.

Transaction fees are how NXT are re-circulated back into the network. Currently transaction fees are generated by sending NXT, assigning aliases, using the arbitrary messaging feature, issuing, buying or selling the assets. Transaction fees are currently set at a minimum of 1 NXT per payment. As NXT price increases, the minimum fee is planned to be reduced to continue to allow micro-transactions to be practical. The total fee reached 1,112,084 NXT after 6 months. 4,697,286,927 NXT were already transferred (= 4.7 x total supply of NXT).

CT: Being considered a second-gen cryptocurrency, do you see Nxt making Bitcoin obsolete or can both have their specific uses and co-exist?

NXT: Andreas M. Antonopoulos often says: there will be millions of cryptos and they will happily co-exist. David Johnson [Mastercoin] also shares this opinion; there will always be a space for more players, since each crypto aims for specific users. Nxt is to Bitcoin …

It’s forging time, Nxters!

Why now?

You want to make your stake active in a Nxt pool before the public launch of Nxt Asset Exchange.

The AE goes live with a 1000 NXT fee per asset issued, and all fees go to forgers. Consider this a startup bonus or just the beginning of better times for Nxt forgers, as fees will increase with the number of arbitrary messages, AE-transactions+issuers and future features that are being built on top of Nxt.

No matter the size of your stake you should forge or lease your forging rights to a Nxt pool. The leasing feature is quite new so you may not be aware that it takes 1440 blocks (24 hours) from you hit the “lease”-button until  your NXT-stake is actively forging in the account/pool that you lease it to. With only about 36 hours to the public launch of Nxt Asset Exchange, the time to lease is now, if you want to be forging in a pool when the first IPO’s begin.

Did I mention that by forging you help secure the Nxt Network from attacks and thereby protects your stake?

What’s it like?

forkedchain:

Leasing your balance is of no risk to you. When leasing, you still maintain full control of your NXT – the pool simply receives your “effectiveBalance” which is your current forging power. You can still sell any amount of your NXT or receive some. The pool cannot do anything with your NXT account or balance.  When you sell/buy more during an active lease, what happens is your contribution to the pool is automatically adjusted for in the NXT protocol.

You have to trust the pool to distribute your share to you, as the forging fee stays with the pool.
This will be relevant until the launch of Nxt Automated Transactions.

You choose the length of the lease. Max leasing period allowed is 32767 blocks (1 minute block time).

If you want to leave the pool before the expiration time you’ve set, just transfer your NXT to another account. Forging rights are then transferred to this account. A balance of 0 NXT stays with the pool until the leasing period ends.
