Nxter News – July 2018 (III): Imagination Is The Highest Form Of Research

July (III)

Welcome, dear Nxters and other followers!

Imagination is not the same as following a trend. Adding a touchscreen on your espresso maker does not make it better, you have just feature-creeped an existing product likely at the expense of a good user experience. No, imagination is coming up with a unique solution, not combining feature X on to product Y. Research is the process of confirming, or disproving, a hypothesis, the scientific method. Research has its use, but research is not creativity either, only the imagination is creativity. Thomas Edison was not imaginative, he did not invent the lightbulb, he perfected its use, yes, but he did not have the original idea to generate light from the resistance to electrical current flow. Imagination is true inspiration, it is pure creativity, it is the potential we all have to create something from our head that makes the world better for everyone. Sheep follow trends, people imagine. What can you imagine creating that makes the world better? It is still summer, so go outside and think under a shady tree.

As you can imagine, last week was slow-paced but eventful for the Nxt / Ardor / Ignis world as we learned, finally, who is currently working at Jelurida, there is a new Nxter Puzzle with a reward of 500 IGNIS to the first to solve it, we call out Cardano’s BS claim, provide you with a summary of the JPL, update you on Triffic, c2c, Janus, Bitswift, and the Dominium ICO (it is well reviewed), we remind you of the significance of running a Nxt / Ardor node and much more.

It is not your imagination, we thank you for embracing us as we take you on a journey through the week that was, Summer style.

  • Are You Being Paid by Cardano? Why Do You Omit Reality? Out the Lies

Check out this tweet below, prepare to :facetable: over the outright BS that is this claim.

Oh my, this is so cringe-worthy, so blatantly wrong. Why do we highlight this?

It is incredibly irritating when you see that reality is being manipulated by gross lies. Serguei Popov, mtchl, wrote an academic paper years ago about the Nxt Forging Algorithm and how secure it is, long before most blockchain fashion writers started writing, or even knew that the blockchain was. More than a year and a half ago we presented this news (again), as his report got published in the Ledger Journal, published by the University of Pittsburgh. Back then we already had a secure 100% PoS system.

  • Dominium ICO Review + Medium Article

The upcoming Dominium ICO continues to be well reviewed, as is the company and their business model. It might end up being a coup for Ardor that the Jelurida team convinced them to implement and create an Ardor child chain as opposed to being on the less-scalable Ethereum ecosystem. Over 17,000 users in over 150 different countries have now created registered accounts!

Dominium wrote:

Registrations on the Dominium platform also continue to keep us busy, and we have now surpassed 17,000 users. As a global platform, we are pleased to see subscriptions coming in from all over the world, over 150 countries in total and we hope that the platform will continue to be adopted internationally.

  • Weekly Reminder

Last week, the ANG launched a bounty program to reward those who set up a new Ardor node during the month of July. This program is still going on and will last until 50 total payouts are given away. Each person is limited to two nodes. But, does it make sense to set new nodes in the network even if they are not used to forge?

The answer is “yes”, and Petko, core developer at Jelurida, explained why:

Full nodes that don’t forge are still valuable exactly because they are still repeating all transactions and blocks, so yes, they increase the size of the network and make it harder to attack. Public full nodes have one more usage – they are used by the light client”

This is not the first time that Petko informed us about the security of the Ardor/Nxt network. We shared an interesting thought some months ago.

Additionally, it’s not the first time that a member of the community tries to push the number of nodes active in the network or the total forging power. Do you remember Megalodon’s campaign?

  • FAQ about Jelurida Public License

Another commonly asked question to us, the veteran community, and Jelurida concerns airdrops and the Jelurida Public License (JPL). Who will be airdropped what, if they hold what coin, and are Nxt and Ardor open source? Because of the extreme relevance, this has to all Nxters – ARDR, NXT, and IGNIS holders – we decided to publish – and also translate – the full content of Jelurida’s response.

Please read and understand:

10 Things about the JPL

What is the JPL?

JPL stands for Jelurida Public License – an open source license similar to the popular GNU GPLv2 and GNU GPLv3 open source licenses. Both Nxt and Ardor software are released under the JPL.

What is the main difference between the JPL and the GPL?

The main difference is that the JPL has a 10% airdrop requirement. This means that clones of Nxt will have to allocate 10% of their tokens to NXT holders proportionately to their account balances and clones of Ardor will have to give away 10% of the forging tokens (their parent chain tokens) to IGNIS holders proportionately to their account balances. The account balances shall be based on a snapshot take not earlier than three months before the launch of the clone.

Are there any other important differences between the JPL and the GPL?

Yes, other important difference is that, as a consequence of the 10% Airdrop requirement, internal use (a private or permissioned clone) is not allowed except for evaluation purposes for no longer than three months. This is because a private/permissioned blockchain clone cannot fulfill the Airdrop requirement.

Is there any airdrop requirement in case of a “hard fork”?

In case of a blockchain split (the so called “hard fork”) the forging token holders (NXT or ARDR holders) will have by definition the same amount of tokens on the Nxt or Ardor fork. There is no additional airdrop requirement in this case.

If I make a clone of a fork, do I still need to do an Airdrop?

Yes, you still need to satisfy the 10% Airdrop requirement to NXT/IGNIS holders.

If I make a clone of a Nxt/Ardor clone, do I still need to do an Airdrop?

Yes, you still need to satisfy the 10% Airdrop requirement to NXT/IGNIS holders.

Can I put my copyright notice on the software?

Yes, if you have made copyrightable modifications to the Nxt/Ardor software, you can put a copyright notice to them. But by all means you should keep the existing copyright notices, i. e. 2013-2016 Nxt core developers and 2016-2018 Jelurida IP B.V.

Do I have to release the source code of the software of my clone?

Yes, you should release the source code at the same time when you release any downloadable binaries. The source code should be accessible from the same place where the binaries are.

Under what license should I release the software of my clone?

You should release it under the Jelurida Public License and also include the full text of the JPL in it.

Can I sell licenses for private or permissioned blockchains for the software of my clone?

Since your clone will be a derived work based on Nxt/Ardor software and the JPL does not allow you to release it under any license other than the JPL, you cannot sell licenses or create private blockchains for third parties, unless you have obtained a permission or have reached an agreement with Jelurida to do so.

IN THE MEDIA

  • Nasdaq – Ardor Hopes to Solve the Scalability Issues in the Way of Blockchains’ Mass Adoption

Every day in my Google News feed I read about how major company “X” is announcing a new blockchain solution. While this is good news for adoption and exposure of the tech, many times it seems as if “blockchain” is just another industry buzzword. Nonetheless, businesses need to continue to hear how blockchain scalability is synonymous with the name “Ardor.” This guest piece in Nasdaq correctly highlights how Ardor is among the most notable scalability solution, and the ONLY working and stable one!

The author wrote:

….

While Bitcoin and Ethereum are still contemplating how to best approach the scalability issue, groundbreaking solutions are popping up. One of the most notable ones is Ardor, a project by Jelurida , the company behind the cryptocurrency NXT.

The Ardor project also addresses blockchain scalability and usability by introducing what is known as “child chains .” A child chain is an offset from the main Ardor chain designed to provide specific business purposes while maintaining the security and the functionality of the parent chain. Simply put, when a business decides to use the Ardor blockchain, a child chain is trimmed from the main chain and customized for the specific purpose of that business.

The child chain comes without the technical requirements of running a blockchain, given that all of the legwork is done at the main chain and is the responsibility of Jelurida. This approach can be termed as “blockchain as a service” since it’s open to all users and does not require any technical background in blockchain technology to implement.

  • Lior Yaffe at Hackernoon – Dead Man Switch, How to Save Your Crypto When You Die

This delightfully macabre article by the inimitable Lior asks you to contemplate your own mortality, and more importantly, who inherits your sweet, sweet crypto upon “kicking the bucket” or “shedding the mortal coil.” Yes, imagine you are sitting at your computer and then “WHAM” you are hit by a meteorite or a runaway rocket from Elon Musk – what was once your beautiful, and alive, body is now dead. But, lucky for your beneficiaries, you followed Lior’s advice and created a crypto “Dead Man’s Switch.” Such a “switch” is actually an Approval Model using the Boolean Expression option that you created which is executed upon your death. What you created is a transaction that is NOT approved so long as you are alive and using the Ardor system. Upon death-by-rocket, the lack of use of your account means that after a set time the system knows you are dead and the transaction executes and transfers your crypto assets to an account accessible by your peers. Lightweight Contracts are ideal for this and will make the execution of such a “Dead Man’s Switch” even easier. Nevertheless, in Ardor, right now, you can create this Approval Model! Details are below.

The steps:

Step 1 define the approval model by your account

Step 2 define the “Not” approval model referring to the approval model from step 1.

Step 3 submit the recovery transaction using the “Not” approval model

Step 4 approve the transaction to prevent it from executing

  • Adedayo Adebajo at Medium – Best Practices for Sharing Ardor and Nxt with the World

It is kind of sad that this article needs to exist, but such are the times we live in: best practices for online sharing of the “Gospel of Ardor and Nxt.” The “best practices” really amount to common sense, but this is an important piece to consume. The truth is that blockchain is still a pretty “high-level” technology that requires a fair tech understanding to truly grasp, let alone use. Therefore it is entirely too easy for a well-meaning Ardor fan on Slack or a Nxt lover on Discord to just BOMBARD users with links and WALLS O’ TEXT that make anyone’s eyes glaze over. Be gentle, be thoughtful, have a plan. Read and the preach the word Nxters!

Steps to live by:

Convincing people about a blockchain technology and its advantage is synonymous to sharing your faith with a nonbeliever.

1. First thing to do is to: Pick an Appropriate Channel and Sometimes, Choose the Perfect Time…
2. Another thing you may want to consider doing ahead of this is to: Prepare Your Message…
3. Prepare Your Questions…
4. 4. Always be ready to refer…

  • Adedayo Adebajo at Medium – Blockchain Technology and the End of Corruption

One of the very first whitepapers I ever read on blockchain technology was about how series of sequentially hashed files, referred to as a digital ledger technology, could be used to eliminate corruption. This is a very noble use case for this technology as yes, the data is essentially immutable and there is transparency – but it is not perfect. This well-written article sells you on the amazing benefits of how the blockchain can end corruption. What this article overlooks is the human element of the blockchain – the technology cannot detect when you falsely tag your produce as organic and fresh, that a permissioned-blockchain is not perfectly transparent, and so on and so forth. It is hyperbolic to claim the blockchain will end all corruption, but it is true to say that using the blockchain is a great step to improving transparency and minimizing corruption.

The author wrote:

Let’s look, for example, into the features on the Ardor blockchain that can help eradicate the existence of corruption focusing on the Internal Generated Revenue section, simply by keeping records and tracks of information and transactions. Lest I forget, I believe it is generally known that the essence of Cryptocurrency is that they will one day replace the FIAT. As it’s already difficult to control double-spending in paper currency and printing of new ones into the circulation, initiating a token distribution will be the first step in this.

This well-written and excellently compiled article does a great job presenting the many selling points of Ardor: Ardor has customizable child chains with the main chain handling network and transaction processing, child chains are easily deployable Blockchain-as-a-Service (BaaS) solutions. Unlike the first article in this section, the correct rankings are given to Nxt and Ardor in terms of market capitalizations.

The author wrote:

Last but not least, it’s important not to forget that Ardor is a very powerful platform that may very well be adopted by multiple companies around the globe as it offers a short time for implementation and extremely wide customizability. This makes it ideal for companies looking to work with blockchain technologies but don’t have the resources to create custom ones from the ground up.
